BOONE, N.C. – Marshall Football fell short in a 26-24 loss to App State in front of 31,322 fans on Saturday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C.
With the loss, Marshall falls to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the Sun Belt Conference.
"That's a disappointing loss," Marshall head coach Tony Gibson said. "Obviously, we had a lot of opportunities to win the game and couldn't get it done. The takeaways played a big part in that. They did a great job of getting the ball out and we didn't. Congrats to those guys. They played harder, coached better and all the things that go into winning and losing games."
The loss spoiled some stellar individual performances – some record-setting - by the Herd on Saturday.
Quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson rushed 14 times for 71 carries and two touchdowns. The 71 yards helped him break the single-season rushing record for a quarterback, which was previously 652 set by Danny Wright in 1978. Del Rio-Wilson now has 659 for the season, which leads the Herd.
Linebacker Jayland Parker finished with career-highs in tackles (15), tackles for loss (2.5) and sacks (2.0) in the contest.
"This is a hard one, but we have to put this one back to bed tomorrow and get ready for Georgia Southern and Senior Night," Parker said. "It is a hard one to take, for sure. We've got to be ready for next week."
Wide receiver Demarcus Lacey caught 12 passes for 134 yards and running back Jo'Shon Barbie rushed for 10 carries for 102 yards and a score.
Del Rio-Wilson was also 13 of 21 passing through the air for 146 yards while backup Zion Turner came in and was 8 of 9 for 54 yards.
Marshall jumped out to a 21-9 lead after a pair of touchdown runs by Del Rio-Wilson within four minutes of each other in the second quarter.
Del Rio-Wilson's first touchdown came from 16 yards out to give the Herd a quick response to an App State touchdown and his second came on a 4-yard score with 8:14 to go in the second quarter.
After App State opened the scoring with a field goal, Marshall got a key sack on fourth down from Parker, which led to a short field for the Herd. Marshall took advantage with Barbie scoring on a 5-yard touchdown run to give the Herd its first lead.
In other record-matching accomplishments, Lorcan Quinn's 25-yard field goal in the third quarter tied the single-season field goal mark at 19, matching him with Tim Openlander (1995), David Merrick (1993) and Dewey Klein (1988).
Marshall's postseason hopes now hang on a Senior Day win over Ga. Southern at 1:30 p.m. next Saturday at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
