Marshall Tennis Earns First Win over VCU in Program History

McGrane seals match for The Herd

RICHMOND, Va. – The Marshall University Tennis team (8-1) captured a 4-2 victory in Richmond, Virginia, over the VCU Rams (4-3) for the first time in program history on Sunday to close out the week.
"Ash played awesome with VCU being great fighters as they always have been at home," Herd Tennis Head Coach John Mercer said after the win. "Playing on four courts creates a little bit of a different dynamic, but it was good to see Ash and Nour come out and take control of their matches."
The Herd started strong on doubles with Sophia Hurrion and Aisling McGrane taking their contest at No. 2 with Johanna Strom and Nel Van Hout quickly following at No. 3. Emma Vanderheyden and Nel Van Hout were up 5-3 at No. 1 as their match went unfinished.
In singles, VCU took a 2-1 lead with wins at No. 1 and 4 singles. However, Vanderheyden tied the match at No. 2 singles with a straight sets win.
Mokrynskaya dropped the first set at No. 3 singles in a tiebreaker. The freshman then followed with wins in sets two and three to give The Herd a 3-2 lead.
McGrane proceeded to close out the match with a dominant 6-4, 6-1, triumph at No. 5 to seal the match for MU.
Nour El Ouazzani led 6-4, 3-2, at No. 6 singles with her match going unfinished.
