No. 43 Marshall Tennis Earns Friday Sweep Over Illinois State, Radford

Herd now 10-1 on the season heading into Sunday’s match vs. WVU
BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. – Marshall Tennis had a successful Friday, earning a pair of sweeps over Illinois State and Radford at the 7827 Center in Barboursville.
The Herd defeated Illinois State, 4-0, in clinch action on Friday morning before getting a 7-0 win over Radford in the afternoon.
"It was a little cleaner this afternoon, so that was good to see," Marshall Tennis coach John Mercer said. "I think we just have to keep the mentality of the level we can play from the beginning to the middle to the end and play our standard. They are learning and getting better, and we should be there because we are halfway through the season. It's good to see us trending in that direction."
With the wins, Marshall – ranked No. 43 in the latest ITA team rankings - is now 10-1 on the season.
The afternoon session with Radford featured dominant play throughout as the Herd took all seven matches with the Highlanders.
After the Herd secured the doubles point over Radford with wins at all three positions, Nour El Ouazzani got the singles effort off to a strong start with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles.
Johanna Strom and Aisling McGrane each followed with 6-0, 6-2 wins at Nos. 1 and No. 5 singles respectively and Emma Vanderheyden added a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.
Sophia Hurrion got a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, then Nel Van Hout finished off the sweep at No. 6 singles with a 6-0, 4-6, 10-4 victory.
In the morning match, Marshall made quick work of the Redbirds by winning the doubles point and then getting a trio of wins at singles to close out a 4-0 win.
The doubles point came down to No. 2 doubles and the tandem of Hurrion and McGrane delivered with a 6-4 win over Illinois State to give the Herd the early 1-0 cushion.
McGrane followed with a dominant win over Illinois State's Elena Jankulovska at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-0 to forge a 2-0 lead.
Strom finished off a straight-set win (6-3, 6-3) over Illinois State's Lana Caculovic at No. 1 almost simultaneously as Hurrion closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Illinois State's Nuria Sanz.
Marshall returns to action at 10 a.m. on Sunday when the Herd takes on in-state rival West Virginia in Morgantown.
