ORLANDO, Fla. – The Marshall University Swimming and Diving had another record-breaking day with three program records set on Friday at the Sun Belt Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in Orlando, Florida.
"We have an incredibly tough and resilient group," Herd Swimming and Diving Head Coach Ian Walsh said after day three Our staff could not be prouder of how this team navigated tonight's session. Every person laid it on the line for their teammates."
The records started early as Kseniia Luniushina reset her program and SBC record in prelims in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 52.84 before taking gold and breaking the record again in finals at 52.49. Both marks also set the SBC Championship Meet record and were NCAA B Standards. Mia McBride swam the fourth fastest time in program history at 54.05 before taking silver in finals at 54.61.
On the boards Grace Kelsheimer improved upon her 1m Diving Program Record now setting the bar at 318.00. Ally Humbert reached the finals placing eighth with a score of 212.50.
"So happy to see Grace K on the top of the podium tonight on 1m. Madeline's 100 Fly was another special one as she's worked incredibly hard to master that event. Kseniia swam her three fastest 100 backs today, breaking the SBC Record twice in the process. Those three have been the model of consistency this season and it was really special for them to take home their respective titles."
Madeline Hart captured gold in 100 Butterfly with a time 53.79 as Lauren McNamara took silver at 54.23. McNamara followed with a bronze in the 400 Individual Medley (4:22.42) behind teammate Eszter Laban who took silver (4:16.31).
"Lolo's double was so impressive, not only medaling in both events, but doing so in lifetime best fashion, moving to fourth all time (100 Fly) and sixth all time (400 IM)."
The final program record came in the 400 Medley Relay by Luniushina, Paige Banton, Hart and Audrey West (3:38.11) as they also set an SBC Record in the process.
"To cap off the night winning the 400 Medley Relay, besting our school record by two seconds and setting the SBC Record was incredible. Three of our four legs were 5th years and to share the podium together with that final time racing the relay was a storybook ending."
The Herd also took second through fifth in the 100 Breaststroke with West (1:01.59), Banton (1:02.35), Maddy Akin (1:02.74) and Jenna Bopp (1:03.83). Akin moved to fourth all time in program history as West improved on her second-best all-time mark in finals. Bopp sits sixth after a time of 1:03.13 in prelims.
Molly Warner brought home the final medal with a bronze in the 200 Freestyle (1:48.26) moving into second all time in program history.
"Tomorrow will be another great test for this team. I know they'll bring their best for themselves and for each other."
