Herd Opens SBC Play at Home Against Five-Time Defending Champions, Louisiana

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall Softball (12-12) begins Sun Belt Conference play against the standard of the league, Louisiana (13-10) starting Friday from Dot Hicks Field. The Ragin' Cajuns have won a nation-leading 89 consecutive SBC series dating back to 2013. 

First pitch Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Coach Morgan Zerkle

  • Marshall is in its second season under Head Coach Morgan Zerkle. The 2017 All-American for the Herd led the team that season with a .476 average en route to a NCAA Tournament appearance. The Herd has made two NCAA Regionals in its history (2013 & 2017).  
  • Zerkle - the Milton, West Virginia native - has been drafted to the AUSL's Bandits this past January, alongside Assistant Coach Sydney McKinney. 

MARSHALL NOTES

  • The Herd enters league play having challenged itself. Marshall has faced seven teams ranked or receiving votes in the ESPN.com/USA Today Top 25 Poll. 
  • Several Marshall players continue to heat up at the plate, including senior Bub Feringa. The Glendale, Arizona native is batting .600 in her last five games including Tuesday's three-run home run. 
  • Marshall has seven qualifying players hitting above .300. Freshman Diamond Leslie leads the team with a .421 average and is tied atop the league lead with three triples. 
  • Marshall has won five of its eight SBC series played at Dot Hicks Field over the last two seasons.

ABOUT LOUISIANA

  • The Ragin' Cajuns are 13-10 under first-year head coach Alyson Habetz. UL has a rich history in softball. In addition to its nation-leading conference series winning streak, Louisiana is one of six schools to play in every NCAA Tournament since 2000 (Alabama, Florida State, Oklahoma, UCLA, Washington). 
  • Senior Kayla Falterman leads the team with a .411 average. Freshman pitcher Mallory Wheeler leads a strong pitching staff with five wins and a 2.77 ERA. 
  • The two programs have only met once prior, in the 2023 SBC Championship. UL won by a 1-0 score to win the league's tournament title.
