Marshall Opens SBC Play With Win Over Louisiana, Earns Friday Split

3/14/2025 9:46:00 PM | Softball

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall Softball (13-13, 1-1 SBC) split its doubleheader on Friday against the five-time defending league champions, Louisiana (14-11, 1-1 SBC).

The Herd defeated the Ragin' Cajuns, 6-5 in come-from-behind fashion in the conference-opener. The game was pushed up from Sunday due to the impending weather forecast.

MU would fall in the nightcap, 7-1 to set up Saturday's rubber game for 4 p.m. as scheduled.

On Saturday, Marshall will attempt to end UL's NCAA-leading 89-series winning streak which dates back to 2013.

First Game: Marshall 6, Louisiana 5

Senior Rielly Lucas put the Herd ahead with her double to the opposite way in the bottom of the 6th. Lucas initially put the team ahead with a three-run home run in the 1st, again going the other way. Her four RBI match a single-game career-high.

Lucas's double was the fourth-consecutive Herd batter to reach in the 6th after doubles from Haleigh Adkins and Brooklyn Ulrich and a walk from Kasia Parks

The timely hitting came in support of starter Bub Feringa, who threw 143 pitches in a complete-game victory. The Herd's senior worked around a five-run flurry from the Ragin' Cajuns across the 3rd and 4th innings to keep the team off the board over the final three frames.

Feringa's second complete-game win of the season was finalized by working around a one-out double in the 7th. Feringa struck out her second Cajun and secured the win with a groundout to Ulrich at second. She successfully stranded 10 UL runners on base.

The win was the second for Marshall this season in its final at-bat.

Second Game: Louisiana 7, Marshall 1

Marshall's defense threw out three Louisiana runners trying to score at the plate in game two.

Parks picked up her fourth assist of the season with a strike from center field to end the UL 1st. Chandler Hoskins threw out two runners from right field in the 6th.

The Herd kept its scoring-streak alive with the Adkins' second-career home run in the 7th.
