Marshall Softball Ends Louisiana’s 89-Series Streak With Saturday Win

3/15/2025 7:36:00 PM | Softball

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The 2013 season was the last time Louisiana softball lost a Sun Belt Conference series. That streak of 89 consecutive three-game sets ended Saturday afternoon at Dot Hicks Field.

Marshall (14-13, 2-1 SBC) used a seven-run first inning to propel itself to a 12-4 series-clinching victory over the five-time defending league champion Ragin' Cajuns (14-12, 1-2 SBC).

The win is a signature victory for second-year Head Coach Morgan Zerkle.

"Super proud of [the team]," Coach Zerkle said. "We knew what we were capable of all season long. For them to show up weekend one against a very good opponent and hitting, pitching, defense and be phenomenal, just so fun to see."

The runs came in support of Bub Feringa, who won her second game in as many days against the Ragin' Cajuns. Feringa kept the ball low, inducing 13 groundouts on a windy and rainy day in Huntington.

Feringa was also one of five Herd players with multiple hits on Saturday.

"It's a great feeling to continue into the next few weeks," Feringa said. "We just need to keep trusting what we're doing and having fun with it."

The seven-run opening frame brought 13 MU batters to the plate. Three consecutive singles to the left side from Diamond Leslie, Abby Darnley and Paige Simpson gave MU a 4-1 advantage.

Feringa settled down the UL offense after its three-run home run in the 3rd. The Marshall offense picked back up in the 5th with an RBI double from Chandler Hoskins. The redshirt freshman drove in a career-best three RBI with a career-high three hits, including the game-ending hit to right center.

Marshall finishes its first homestand of the year with an 8-2 record. The Herd has a pair of MAC midweek games coming this week starting against Miami (OH) on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
