No. 65 Herd Tennis Opens Weekend with Sweep of Southern Miss

Mokrynskaya sealed match with win at No. 3 singles

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 65 Marshall University Tennis team (12-3, 1-2 SBC) began its weekend with a 4-0 sweep of the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (4-6, 0-3 SBC) on Saturday at 7827 Tennis Center in Barboursville.
"They did a good job moving inside on short notice," Herd Tennis Head Coach John Mercer said after taking the contest indoors when the team was preparing for an outdoors contest. "I thought we did a great job with our start in doubles. We got the momentum and went from there."
The Herd opened doubles strong. Alina Mokrynskaya and Emma Vanderheyden started with a 6-0 victory at No. 1 as Sophia Hurrion and Aisling McGrane quickly followed without dropping a game in 6-0 triumph at No. 2.
Johanna Strom and Nel Van Hout were leading 4-1 as their match went unfinished at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Strom wasted no time with a 6-0, 6-0, clean sweep of Hannah Chambers at No. 1.
Vanderheyden quickly followed with a 6-3, 6-1, win in straight sets over Malannia Vaskevich at No. 2 as Mokrynskaya sealed the match as No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-0, triumph over Miranda Xu at No. 3.
Hurrion and Nour El Ouazzani each took their opening set and were up in their second sets as their matches went unfinished at No. 4 and 5, respectively.
McGrane's match at No. 6 singles did not start before the match finished.
