BOONE, N.C. — With a combined 42 runs across 15 innings of softball Saturday at App State, Marshall Softball (22-16, 8-4 SBC) will have to settle for the doubleheader split against the Mountaineers (15-21, 6-6 SBC).
The Herd scored 20 runs Saturday, with five home runs, including two leadoff homers from senior Rielly Lucas.
Combined with the result Friday, it is the first series dropped for the Herd this season but Marshall does still finish the weekend with at least a share of second place.
The Herd rallied for six runs in the 7th to win the opener Saturday. It was Marshall's third conference win this season when entering the 7th trailing.
App would flip the switch in the rubber game, scoring three in the 6th before hitting a walk-off grand slam in extras.
First Game: Marshall 12, App State 10
The six runs on six hits in the 7th was the fifth lead change of Saturday's opener. Freshman Diamond Leslie had two hits in the rally. Leslie was driven in by redshirt freshman Chandler Hoskins, who followed suit on a Bub Feringa opposite field shot. A two-run RBI from Lucas finished as the winning run for the Herd.
Sophomore Kaleea Washington earned the win in relief, her first in 2025. She pitched 4.1 IP with three strikeouts. The Florida native righted the ship after a five-run 3rd for the Mountaineers all with two outs.
The Herd quickly regained the lead after Washington took over with a four-run 4th. Abby Darnley hit a three-run home run with junior Paige Simpson going back-to-back. The opposite field drive was Simpson's first with the Herd.
11 Marshall players have now gone deep this season with all nine qualifying hitters having a long ball.
Washington struck out the final hitter to secure the win in the 7th.
Second Game: App State 12, Marshall 8 (8 Innings)
Marshall held an 8-4 lead after four complete before App State mounted its comeback. The Lucas leadoff home run was followed by a two-run shot by Ulrich in the 2nd.
The Herd strung together five consecutive hits in the 3rd with an RBI double from Darnley to cap a four-run frame.
Freshman Maddie Veal helped to put out a fire in the 6th, and she escaped a jam in the 7th before the 8th inning grand slam.
UP NEXT
Marshall travels to Kentucky Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. The Herd will travel straight from Lexington Thursday to South Alabama for next weekend's three-game series.
