Herd Softball Travels to Lexington For Midweek Against Kentucky

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall's softball team (22-16, 8-4 SBC) takes on the Kentucky Wildcats (23-17, 6-9 SEC) Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. in Lexington.Â
Following the midweek contest, the Herd will depart directly from Lexington Thursday to continue league play at South Alabama this weekend. Â

Coach Morgan Zerkle
- Marshall is in its second season under Head Coach Morgan Zerkle. The 2017 All-American for the Herd led the team that season with a .476 average en route to a NCAA Tournament appearance. The Herd has made two NCAA Regionals in its history (2013 & 2017). Â
- Zerkle - the Milton, West Virginia native - has been drafted to the AUSL's Bandits this past January, alongside Assistant Coach Sydney McKinney.Â
- Coach Zerkle was an assistant at Miami for four seasons.Â
MARSHALL NOTES
- Midway through the league season, Marshall is tied for second place in the Sun Belt Conference with an 8-4 record. The Herd is three wins away from matching last season's win total. The full SBC standings can be seen HERE.
- Senior Rielly Lucas hit two home runs from the leadoff spot over the weekend, bringing her total to 13 on the season. That total is second in the SBC and seven off the all-time program record for home runs in a season. Â
- The Herd has a trio of pitchers with five-plus wins in the circle. Senior Bub Feringa leads the team with 67.0 IP, followed by sophomore Jules King (64.1), and junior Paige Maynard (61.0).Â

ABOUT KENTUCKY
- Kentucky is 23-17 and 6-9 in the SEC. The Wildcats are led by longtime head coach Rachel Lawson.Â
- UK is led by sophomore and Lexington native Peyton Plotts with a .357 average and her seven home runs. Kentucky has two pitchers with a sub-3.00 ERA with Sarah Haenidges (2.14) and Alexia Lacatena (2.36).Â
- Kentucky has won 15-of-17 all-time meetings between the two sides, including a 7-0 victory last season. 2018 was Marshall's last victory over an SEC side (Missouri). Â
