Herd Rolls into Postseason with Rare “Tripleheader” Sweep

5/2/2025 9:44:00 PM | Softball

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall beat the elements in addition to its opponent with an unprecedented three victories on Friday at Dot Hicks Field.

The Herd (31-22, 15-9 SBC) finished off Georgia State (12-41, 3-21 SBC) in a continuation from Thursday night's suspended game by scoring four in the 6th to win, 11-3.

Marshall then opened Friday's doubleheader with a 10-2 win in five innings on the heels of five runs in the 4th.

Coach Morgan Zerkle's side finished off the sweep with a convincing 14-0 win with a two hour rain delay mixed in to close the regular season with a chance to finish tied atop the Sun Belt Conference standings.

"A lot of fun today," Coach Zerkle said. "The wins, celebrating our seniors and all they have accomplished and seeing [the team] have fun out there regardless of the circumstances and all the changes we had made it a really enjoyable weekend for us."

First Game: Marshall 11, Georgia State 3 (6 innings)

Marshall led 6-2 in the middle of the 5th when the game was halted Thursday night. The Herd had rallied with six in the 4th highlighted by a Diamond Leslie three-run home run prior to the delay.

Senior Bub Feringa hit a solo shot to kickstart the Herd when the game resumed Friday. Feringa was named the team's 2025 Warrior Award recipient in honor of Emileigh Cooper between games two and three.

Senior Lindsay Henson pitched the top of the 6th before Kasia Parks and Brooklyn Ulrich drove in runs to end the game.

Following the opener, the team's five graduates (Bub Feringa, Lindsay Henson, Rielly Lucas, Kasia Parks, Brooklyn Ulrich) were honored on the field.

Second Game: Marshall 10, Georgia State 2 (5 innings)

Lindsay Henson drove in a Marshall-high four RBI including her first home run for the Herd in the 2nd. Her double capped the Herd's scoring in the 4th.

Rielly Lucas started Marshall's offense in the 1st with her 15th home run of the season off the foul pole in right field. She finishes the regular season tied with Bella Gerlach from last year for eighth all-time in a single-season in program history.

Third Game: Marshall 14, Georgia State 0 (5 innings)

Sophomore Jules King finished the regular season with a gem in the circle, striking out six in five innings of work. She finishes the regular season with a team-leading 96 punchouts.

MU scored five in its first at-bat, one in the 2nd, and eight in the 3rd. Marshall scored in 10-consecutive innings leading up to the 4th. The eight runs in the 3rd were Marshall's third time scoring eight in a frame this season.

Sophomore Haleigh Adkins drove in a team season-high six runs with a grand slam and a two-RBI triple.
