HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall University will officially be sending two athletes to the First Round of the NCAA Championships next week in Jacksonville, Florida. Lara Check and Addison Painter each qualified for the Prelims to the NCAA Championship Finals in Long Jump.
"Lara and Addison are both in the midst of a historic season," Director of Track & Field Keith Roberts said. "They are two of the best jumpers in the nation and to have them in the program at the same time is great for our program, athletic department and university. They both represent Marshall at the highest level day in and day out. They are fearless competitors and I look forward to seeing them compete among the best in the nation."
Check - the Herd's junior from Sydney, Australia - is ranked 26th out of the Top-48 in the East Region with her personal record mark of 6.24 meters jumped at the Hurricane Invitational at Miami in March. She will be the first MU women's long jumper represented at the NCAA Prelims since recently-inducted Marshall Hall of Famer Crystal Walker qualified for the NCAA Championship Finals in the event in 2013.
Painter - Marshall's graduate senior from Vermilion, Ohio - broke a school record set from 1996 when he jumped 7.55 meters at the Hurricane Invitational to earn the 46th-best mark of the NCAA East Region. He will be the second Marshall Men's T&F athlete to compete in the NCAA Prelim Round since the program returned for the 2022-23 season (Brett Armbruster: 800m).
