Marshall Women Edge Georgia State 3-2 in Dramatic Conference Home Opener

9/21/2025 10:25:00 PM | Women's Soccer

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall (5-3-1) overcame an early red card and played with 10 for more than 75 minutes, rallying behind backup goalkeeper Katie McCutcheon to secure a 3-2 win over Georgia State on Sunday night in their Sun Belt Conference home opener.

"One of the craziest games I've ever been a part of, a game we will remember forever" Head Coach Rafa Simoes said. "We had Katie McCutcheon step up as a freshman saving balls. Once we had a player down we still were brave and played our game, I am a very proud coach."

Marshall's resilience defined the night after starting keeper Emma Durand was sent off in the 14th minute for denying a goal-scoring opportunity.

Forced to adjust, the Herd continued to attack, scoring on a penalty kick by senior Bailey Fisher in the 28th minute, her fifth goal of the season and 17th career tally.

Brooklyn McComas doubled the advantage in the 54th minute, slotting home from a long range shot from the corner of the 18 yard box.

Georgia State responded two minutes later, converting a penalty of their own to trim the margin to 2-1.

The decisive third goal came as Fernanda Dantas crossed in a well placed corner in the 62nd minute, providing a vital cushion. The Panthers pulled one back in the 79th minute, but McCutcheon produced four key saves to preserve the win in a frantic final stretch.

Marshall's victory snapped Georgia State's perfect Sun Belt start
