Women’s Soccer Hosts Arkansas State for Senior Night Saturday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Looking to build off its Sun Belt Conference victory of the year, Marshall Women's Soccer (5-3-1, 1-1-1 SBC) remains home to face Arkansas State (2-2-4, 0-1-1 SBC) Saturday evening at 7 p.m. 

Saturday will be Senior Night for the women's soccer program. The Herd will honor nine seniors - Marcella Alves, Mia Eickmann, Kajsa Ekstrom, Bailey Fisher, Angel Fowler, Ami Komori, Ebony Leckey, Luiza Travassos, and Alexis Wolgemuth - before the contest.

COACH RAFA SIMOES

  • Head Coach Rafa Simoes is in year two leading Marshall's women's soccer program. The former associate with the Herd men's team is a 2018 graduate of the University of Charleston in West Virginia, where he played for then-head coach Chris Grassie.
  • Simoes coached 19 newcomers in his first season leading Marshall's women's soccer team. He earned his first win as a head coach on Sept. 1, 2024 in a 1-0 victory over Belmont.  

PRE-MATCH NOTES

  • Marshall defeated Georgia State in its last contest Sunday evening, despite being reduced to 10 players just 13 minutes into the match. Freshman goalkeeper Katie McCutcheon made four saves in relief in her collegiate debut. 
  • Senior Bailey Fisher converted on her third penalty kick of the season in Sunday's victory. The Hurricane native enters the weekend tied for 6th in the league with five goals. 
  • Marshall has seen 11 players score a goal this season, its most since the 2019 season. 

ABOUT THE RED WOLVES

  • Arkansas State is 2-2-4 overall, still searching for its first win in league play. At 0-1-2, the Red Wolves are within two points of the eighth place cutoff for the SBC Women's Soccer Championship. For the full standings, view HERE
  • A-State's Kennedy Horn is tied for the league lead with seven goals. The junior midfielder had four goals in the team's 10-0 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sept. 7.
  • Head Coach Brian Dooley is in his 11th season leading the Red Wolves, and 29th season as a head coach. He carries a 49-74-28 record with A-State.
  • The two sides will be meeting for the first time in Huntington on Saturday. The only other meeting came in the Herd's first season in the Sun Belt, where A-State came away with a 3-2 victory in Jonesboro.
