Thomas’ 2nd straight round under par leads Herd to strong final day
NASHPORT, Ohio – Marshall Men's Golf finished in fourth place as a team at the 2025 Virtues Intercollegiate, which wrapped up on Tuesday at The Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.
Clayton Thomas led Marshall on the week, finishing at 1-under to earn a T-11 result. On Tuesday, Thomas fired his second straight round under par – a 1-under 71 – to pace the Herd.
"It was really good day for the team," Marshall coach Matt Grobe said. "The conditions and course were a lot tougher today and the guys responded. Clayton played really good this week to lead us."
Thomas' 1-under 71 comes after he fired a 3-under 69 in the second round of the event on Monday afternoon. For the week, Thomas finished with 12 birdies.
Thomas was joined in the top-20 by teammate Tanner Vest, who stayed consistent throughout the week to earn his first collegiate top-20 finish, ending the tournament at T-18. Vest had rounds of 72-74-73 with his highlight coming in Monday's first round when he notched an eagle on the par-5 10th hole that helped him to an Even-par finish for the round.
Vest's eagle was one of three the Herd players had on the week with Cael Ropietski and Jackson Woodburn also getting in on the action. Wes Lorish also was just behind Vest at T-22.
Grobe said he was pleased as five different players notched rounds of Even-par or better during the tournament.
"Tanner continued his strong start to fall with a top-20 finish and Wes (Lorish) finished strong to get a top-25," Grobe said. "The team hit a lot of good shots and I was very impressed with how they kept their focus."
Marshall now takes some time to get back on the course prior to the Bash In The Boro on Oct. 13-14, hosted by Georgia Southern.
