Freshman cards consecutive low rounds in first collegiate action

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall freshman Wes Lorish had a day to remember in his first-ever collegiate tournament.

Lorish fired a 6-under 65 in his opening round, then followed it with a 5-under 66 to lead all competitors after Day One of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational at Guyan Country Club on Monday.

"Being 6-under at the end of the first round let me just play free in the second round, so it was really smooth sailing from there," Lorish said.

Lorish showed his abilities in prime fashion on Monday, notching stretches in which he carded four straight birdies in each round to power him to the lead at 11-under.

In his first round, Lorish battle back from a bogey on his opening hole to card four straight birdies on Hole Nos. 8-11. Later, the freshman ended his round with an eagle on No. 1 to give him a 6-under 65, which gave him momentum going into the second round.

Lorish again found rhythm in the middle of his round with a birdie streak on Hole Nos. 10-13 before parring his final six holes to take the lead into the final day.

Lorish's effort was part of a full day of low-scoring for many competitors out at the par-71 course. Sophomore Cael Ropietski also started strong in his first team collegiate event, joining Clayton Thomas with 3-under 68s in the first round. Tanner Vest also carded a 2-under 69 in the opening round for the Herd.

"Seeing Wes and Cael and what they've done in their first real collegiate events in the lineup – Cael played a couple tournaments last year as an individual – is exciting," Marshall Men's Golf coach Matt Grobe said. "Those guys are playing Nos. 2 and 3 for us right now in their first collegiate event and I couldn't ask for more out of those guys. There's a little bit of familiarity and comfort level with playing our home golf course, so it's nice to start our year with that feeling."

Marshall is currently at 8-under heading to the final day with five teams currently within three strokes of each other in place Nos. 3 through 7.

Eastern Kentucky currently leads the event at 24-under heading into Tuesday's final round, which gets started at 8:30 a.m.
