HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Marshall Women's Basketball snapped a two-game losing streak with a defensive-driven 61-52 victory over Southern Miss at Reed Green Coliseum on Thursday night. The Herd improved to 16-5 overall and 7-2 in conference play, handing Southern Miss just its second home loss of the season.
The Herd set the tone early, holding the Golden Eagles to just eight points in the first quarter and taking a 31-17 lead into halftime. Marshall's trademark defensive pressure forced 20 Southern Miss turnovers and produced 13 steals, with three players with three swipes apiece.
Meredith Maier paced Marshall offensively with 14 points, hitting 4-of-8 from three-point range for her seventh double-digit scoring game of the season.
"We knew as a team that those two games we dropped really were not us," Maier said. "Going into practice this week we had a bigger mindset on what we wanted to accomplish and clean up. I think we were able to do that and although we had a sloppy second half, we were able to manage the game and play the way we wanted to and come out with a win."
Timaya Lewis-Eutsey delivered another steady all-around effort, notching 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Peyton Ilderton added 11 points, including a clutch triple to seal the win as Southern Miss closed the gap late.
Blessing King anchored Marshall on the glass, leading the team with nine rebounds - five offensive - off the bench and surpassing the 100-rebound mark for the season. The Herd's reserves outscored the Southern Miss bench 18-2.
