Marshall Softball Travels to Ohio Wednesday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Sun Belt Conference-leading Marshall Thundering Herd (32-10, 13-2 SBC) travels to Athens to face Ohio (28-15, 11-7 MAC).

First pitch between the Herd - who is receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Softball poll - and Bobcats is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Coach Morgan Zerkle

Head Coach Morgan Zerkle is in her 3rd season as head coach at her alma mater. The 2017 All-American for the Herd led the team that season with a .476 average en route to a NCAA Tournament appearance. The Herd has made two NCAA Regionals in its history (2013 & 2017).
Marshall vaulted up to a 2nd place finish in the Sun Belt Conference in season two under Zerkle. The Herd improved its win total by six games with five more SBC victories from the season prior.
Zerkle - the Milton, West Virginia native - plays professionally for the AUSL's Chicago Bandits. She is also on the active Team USA Softball roster.

MARSHALL NOTES

Marshall is ranked No. 20 nationally in RPI, which leads the SBC and all non-"Power 4" conferences. The mark, which is the NCAA's top measuring tool for softball, is the highest in program history, surpassing the 2017 Zerkle-led Herd which peaked at No. 31.
In addition to receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Softball Top-25 poll, the team is ranked No. 25 nationally in D1Softball's poll, it is the first national poll MU has appeared in since 2017.
The Herd scored a season-high 15 runs with a season-high 17 hits in its victory over Coastal Carolina to seal a sweep. The team has hit 75 home runs this season, tied for 2nd all-time in program history. 79 in the program record set in 2019.
MU's pitching staff has a trio with a sub-3.00 ERA. Junior Jules King surpassed the 100 strikeout mark over the weekend, she leads the team 106 punchouts. The Steubenville, Ohio native has a single-season program mark with six saves.

Ohio is 28-15 this season and 11-7 in the MAC.
Senior Belle Hummel leads the Bobcats with a .476 average, the 2nd-best clip in the MAC. Graduate senior Skipp Miller leads the OU pitching staff with a 3.75 ERA and a league-leading 15 wins in the circle.
Marshall has played Ohio on 63 previous occasions, more than any other program in official competition. The Herd leads the series, 41-22 and has won the last three meetings.
