Marshall Softball Plays Final Scheduled Midweek at EKU

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall Softball (34-12) begins its final road trip of the 2026 regular season with a Tuesday midweek at EKU (24-20-1). First pitch from Gertrude Hood Field is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Coach Morgan Zerkle

  • Head Coach Morgan Zerkle is in her 3rd season as head coach at her alma mater. The 2017 All-American for the Herd led the team that season with a .476 average en route to a NCAA Tournament appearance. The Herd has made two NCAA Regionals in its history (2013 & 2017).  
  • Marshall vaulted up to a 2nd place finish in the Sun Belt Conference in season two under Zerkle. Season three under Zerkle has already seen the team with its most overall wins and has matched its total in league victories with 15. 
  • Zerkle - the Milton, West Virginia native - plays professionally for the AUSL's Chicago Bandits. She is also on the active Team USA Softball roster. 

MARSHALL NOTES

  • Marshall hit its 80th home run in Sunday's series finale, a new single-season program record. The Herd has three hitters with 10+ homers this season - Sydni Burko (17), Ava Blake (16) and Bella Gerlach (12). 
  • As a team, the Herd is seeking its 35th victory of the 2026 season, which would be its 12th season with 35 or more wins.
  • MU's Jules King is in the Top-4 in strikeouts in the conference this season with 120. King has had 13 appearances this season with five or more strikeouts.

ABOUT EKU

  • Eastern Kentucky has a 24-20-1 record this season. Head Coach Jane Worthington has a record of 970-813-1 in her 34 seasons with the Colonels, her first tie coming Sunday in EKU's last contest.
  • Freshman Bayle Hunnicutt leads the team with a 3.56 ERA. Her and Victoria Byrum both have over 100 strikeouts this season.
  • Marshall leads the all-time series, 20-7. Tuesday will be the first meeting between the two sides since 2019.
