Marshall Softball Travels to Louisiana for Penultimate Sun Belt Conference Series

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Sun Belt Conference-leading Marshall Thundering Herd (35-12, 15-3 SBC) travels to Louisiana to face the Ragin' Cajuns (25-23, 8-10 SBC). The first game of a three-game set from Lafayette is scheduled for 7 p.m. eastern, 6 p.m. central time Friday evening. 

With two weekends remaining in the regular season, the Herd has a one game lead in the SBC standings over ULM. The full standings can be viewed HERE.

Coach Morgan Zerkle

  • Head Coach Morgan Zerkle is in her 3rd season as head coach at her alma mater. The 2017 All-American for the Herd led the team that season with a .476 average en route to a NCAA Tournament appearance. The Herd has made two NCAA Regionals in its history (2013 & 2017).  
  • Marshall vaulted up to a 2nd place finish in the Sun Belt Conference in season two under Zerkle. Season three under Zerkle has already seen the team with its most overall wins and has matched its total in league victories with 15. 
  • Zerkle - the Milton, West Virginia native - plays professionally for the AUSL's Chicago Bandits. She is also on the active Team USA Softball roster.

MARSHALL NOTES

  • Marshall has won all six of its league series this season, the lone team in the SBC to do so. The Herd will be making two trips to Lafayette over the next three weeks with the SBC Championship starting Wednesday, May 6 from Lamson Park. 
  • The Herd's 81 home runs this year is a single-season program record and eighth-most in the country. Sophomore Sydni Burko has 18 longballs this year, which is two from tying MU's individual single-season program mark. 
  • MU's pitching ranks 3rd in the SBC, with a team ERA of 2.92. With a trio of pitchers possessing 10 or more victories, Jules King leads the staff with 14 wins, six saves, and 125 strikeouts. Her five saves is a single-season program record.

ABOUT LOUISIANA

  • Louisiana is 25-23 this season with an 8-10 league record. The Ragin' Cajuns are 15-6 at home this year, including 7-2 in home conference games. 
  • Junior Mia Liscano leads the SBC with a .424 average. She is one of three Cajuns with 50 or more base hits this year. 
  • The Herd and Ragin' Cajuns do not have a lengthy history, with the series tied at two wins apiece. The only meeting all-time in Lafayette was a 1-0 win for UL in the 2023 SBC Championship, before MU took the series last season in Huntington.
