Marshall Softball Hosts Pitt in Tuesday Midweek at Dot Hicks Field

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Sun Belt Conference-leading Marshall Thundering Herd (28-10, 10-2 SBC) hosts the Pitt Panthers (20-17, 6-9 ACC) out of the ACC Tuesday afternoon at Dot Hicks Field.

Coach Morgan Zerkle

Head Coach Morgan Zerkle is in her 3rd season as head coach at her alma mater. The 2017 All-American for the Herd led the team that season with a .476 average en route to a NCAA Tournament appearance. The Herd has made two NCAA Regionals in its history (2013 & 2017).
Marshall vaulted up to a 2nd place finish in the Sun Belt Conference in season two under Zerkle. The Herd improved its win total by six games with five more SBC victories from the season prior.
Zerkle - the Milton, West Virginia native - plays professionally for the AUSL's Chicago Bandits. She is also on the active Team USA Softball roster.

MARSHALL NOTES

Marshall is ranked No. 25 nationally in RPI, which leads the SBC and all non-"Power 4" leagues. The mark which is the NCAA's top measuring tool for softball is the highest in program history, surpassing the 2017 Zerkle-led Herd which peaked at No. 31.
The Herd mashed 10 more home runs in a series sweep over App State over the weekend, surpassing the Mountaineers for the league lead and ranking eighth nationally with 68. Sophomores Tia Titi and Chandler Hoskins had a home run in all three games of the sweep. Placed in the leadoff spot Friday, Hoskins has hit a long ball in Marshall's last five home games.
MU contained App State's potent offense with 14 strikeouts across the three games. Junior Jules King earned her fifth save of the season Thursday, a new single-season program record.

ABOUT PITT

Pitt is 20-17, and 6-9 in the ACC this season. Head Coach Jenny Allard is in her 3rd season in Pittsburgh after a successful 28-year stint at Harvard. With the Panthers' next victory, it will be the most in a season for Pitt under Allard.
Pitt has had six pitchers with at least 11 innings pitched this season. Grad senior Kyra Pittman leads the team in ERA (3.24) and IP (77.2).
Marshall has a 2-4 record all-time against Pitt. Marshall won the last meeting between the two sides in 2023 on a walk-off extra inning base hit.
