Marshall Softball Travels to Coastal Carolina for Three-Game Road Series

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Sun Belt Conference-leading Marshall Thundering Herd (29-10, 10-2 SBC) makes the trip to the beach, taking on the defending SBC Tournament Champions, Coastal Carolina (22-19, 6-6 SBC). 

The first game of a three-game set from Conway is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday evening.

Coach Morgan Zerkle

  • Head Coach Morgan Zerkle is in her 3rd season as head coach at her alma mater. The 2017 All-American for the Herd led the team that season with a .476 average en route to a NCAA Tournament appearance. The Herd has made two NCAA Regionals in its history (2013 & 2017).  
  • Marshall vaulted up to a 2nd place finish in the Sun Belt Conference in season two under Zerkle. The Herd improved its win total by six games with five more SBC victories from the season prior. 
  • Zerkle - the Milton, West Virginia native - plays professionally for the AUSL's Chicago Bandits. She is also on the active Team USA Softball roster. 

MARSHALL NOTES

  • Marshall has won 24 of its last 27 games. The Herd enters the back half of the conference schedule leading the league with a 10-2 record and in RPI at 24. The Herd's 24th spot is the highest among non-"Power 4" conferences.
  • The Herd's 70 home runs is eighth-most in the country. MU has hit 45 long balls in its 27 games away from Huntington this season, a 1.67 average per contest. 
  • MU's pitching ranks 2nd in the SBC, with a team ERA of 2.89. With a trio of pitchers possessing eight or more victories, Jules King leads the staff with 11 wins, five saves, and 98 strikeouts. Her five saves is a single-season program record.

ABOUT COASTAL CAROLINA

  • Coastal Carolina is 22-19 this season with a 6-6 league record. The Chanticleers have the 16th hardest non-conference strength of schedule this season.
  • Fifth year infielder Georgia Hood is tied with the Herd's Sydni Burko with 15 home runs - a mark 2nd in the conference. 
  • The Chanticleers are the only team from the "eastern" side of the conference the Herd does not have a series lead against since joining the SBC in 2023. CCU leads the series since 2023, 6-4, including a win in last season's SBC Tournament Quarterfinals. The Chants lead the all-time series, 12-8.
