Woodburn’s 8-under 64 leads to T-8 finish; Harris caps his 1st collegiate tourney with a 65 as Herd posts low team score in final round
NASHPORT, Ohio – For Marshall's Men's Golf team on Sunday, it was a pair of Jacksons who stole the show en route to a strong final day at The Virtues Intercollegiate.
Jackson Woodburn finished with a career-best 8-under 64 while freshman Jackson Harris carded a 7-under 65 to lead Marshall to the best team final round among the competitors at The Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio on Sunday.
"It was a really good first tournament of the year for us," Marshall Men's Golf coach Matt Grobe said. "We got off to a slow start in the first couple rounds, but the guys battled hard and today, they played incredible. They showed how well they can play when we are all playing good golf."
Woodburn's 8-under 64 was best in the field on Sunday by four strokes as he started strong and continued momentum throughout his final round.
He finished with seven birdies and an eagle – that coming on the par-5 10th hole – to earn his first career top-10 finish. Woodburn finished birdie-birdie to notch a tie for 8th place in the tournament.
While Woodburn's round stole the spotlight, the freshman Harris made his presence known to The Virtues field.
After a double-bogey on his second hole of the day, Harris was lights out the rest of the way, carding eight birdies and an eagle on the par-5 4th hole to vault up the leaderboard as well. Harris' eagle was part of a final five-hole stretch in which he was dominant.
Their superior final rounds were complimented by the steady play of Cael Ropietski who was one of only 12 golfers in the tourney to post scores of Even-par or better in each round. Ropietski finished at Even-par in all three rounds to tie for 19th place.
"Jackson Woodburn posted his career-low round of 64, Jackson Harris played his last five holes at 5-under to post a 65 and Cael played really consistent, shooting Even-par in all three rounds," Grobe said.
As a team, the Herd finished at 13-under in Sunday's final round, which was the best round of any team by four strokes on Sunday and the third-best posted round of the entire event.
The effort boosted the Herd into an Even-par finish for the tourney, which tied them for 5th place. Michigan earned the team title at the event.
It was all part of a successful tournament experience for everyone as all nine team members took part in the action with five playing as team participants and four others playing as individuals.
Among the Herd individuals, Sammy Shy posted the top round of the 54-hole event, finishing Sunday with a 1-over 73 that featured three birdies.
"It was great to get to take all nine guys and watch them compete," Grobe said. "This is a really good group and I am looking forward to watching them improve this year. We have two weeks to get ready to welcome 13 other teams to Guyan Country Club for the 2026 Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational."
The 2026 Joe Feaganes Invitational will take place Sept. 14-15 at Guyan Country Club in Barboursville.
