Team finishes 4th as exciting tournament comes down to the wire

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall freshman Jackson Harris has officially made his introduction to the world of college golf.
Fresh off a final round 65 at the Virtues Intercollegiate, Harris continued his strong play into his second collegiate tournament, firing a final-round 66 (-5) to finish in a tie for second at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational, which wrapped up on Tuesday at Guyan Golf & Country Club.
Harris, who joined the Herd in the summer, said he thrives in the late-tournament situations. His first two tournaments have proven that with a 65 and 66 to his credit.
"Coming down the stretch, I love the pressure," Harris said. "I think I live for that. That's why I play golf – to win. I play to win always. You get in that moment and feel it coming, it just feels like a great opportunity for me."
Harris' showing in the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational solidified a successful week for the Herd – one that culminated with the team in contention late in the tournament.
Harris carded six birdies in his final round, including three in his final six holes, to put pressure on individual champion Remy Stalcup of Morehead State.
In addition to Harris, Tanner Vest earned a T-17 finish after finishing the tournament at 2-under. Vest shot an opening round 69 and followed with a second-round 68, notching five birdies in each round.
As a team, Marshall finished in fourth place at -10, just three strokes off winner Bellarmine, who got a birdie from their final golfer on the course to edge Purdue Fort Wayne by one stroke.
"It was a great week," Marshall head coach Matt Grobe said. "Coming into today, we did not think we were in for what we were…Today, we ended up with seven different teams leading. You bring in 14 teams and half had the lead at one point. It shows you how good college golf is and how good the teams are playing."
Jackson Woodburn joined Harris under par on Tuesday, shooting a 2-under 69 with four birdies for the Herd.
Playing as an individual, Marshall freshman Jake Dost also had an impressive final-round showing in the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational, carding an Even-par 71 with three birdies, including consecutive birdies on Nos. 8 and 9, that preceded eight consecutive pars to end his round.
Marshall returns to action next Monday as the team hits the road for the River Run Collegiate, hosted by Davidson Sept. 21-22.
