Women’s Soccer Welcomes Louisiana Tech Saturday to Open SBC Play

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Women's Soccer (4-2-2) opens Sun Belt Conference play at home against the league's newest member, Louisiana Tech (2-5-1). Kickoff from Hoops Family Field in Huntington is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday evening.
Serving as the unofficial welcome party for the Bulldogs, Marshall will represent the first SBC match in any sport for La Tech since 2001.

COACH RAFA SIMOES
- Head Coach Rafa Simoes is in his third season leading the MU Women's Soccer program. The former associate with the Herd men's team is a 2018 graduate of the University of Charleston in West Virginia, where he played for then-head coach Chris Grassie.
- Simoes and the Herd had a resurgent 2025 season. In his second year as skipper for MU, Simoes led the team to win its most games in a decade with four All-Conference selections, also the program's most since 2015.
PRE-MATCH NOTES
- The Herd - picked 6th in the SBC Preseason Poll - finished unbeaten in home league contests last season (3-0-2), a key reason the team returned to the SBC Tournament for the first time since 2022. MU will play 10 conference matches this year with the Top-8 advancing to Foley, Alabama and the 2026 SBC Women's Soccer Championship in early November.
- Marshall enters league play as the conference leader in assists per game average (2.00). Forward Geovanna Souza leads the Herd with three assists, a number tied for 3rd in the SBC.
- Forward Wiktoria Mikrut leads Marshall in most offensive statistical categories with 33 shots (T-1st in SBC), five goals (4th in SBC) and 11 points (6th in SBC).
ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
- At 2-5-1, La Tech enters league play with victories over Houston Christian and Stephen F. Austin. Forward Abby Hanton and defender Madison Pensom lead the Bulldogs with three goals apiece.
- Head Coach Matt Lodge is in his first season in Ruston, leading a La Tech team picked 13th in the Preseason Poll. The first-time skipper is a 2014 graduate of Kentucky.
- The two sides met on seven occasions in the Conference USA days between 2013-2019. La Tech holds a 3-2-2 advantage.
