2020's shortened season was Matthew Reed's first season as an Assistant Coach with Marshall University. He came to Marshall after spending 2019 as an assistant Coach with Wright State University.

In his year at WSU, Reed was part of a very successful 42-17 record in 2019. Reed primarily worked with the catchers and assisted with hitting. Wright State broke many offensive school records and were atop the charts in many offensive categories throughout the NCAA during the 2019 season.

During the summer of 2019, Reed served as the interim Head Coach for the Hoptown Hoppers in Hopkinsville, KY of the Ohio Valley League. That team proceeded to win the Ohio Valley Championship.

The fall of 2018, Reed served as the Director of Operations for Marshall Baseball, where he handled day to day scheduling, travel arrangements, and other administrative duties.

Prior to his year as the Director of Operations at Marshall, Reed began his coaching career as the Pitching Coach with the Hoptown Hoppers in the Ohio Valley League, where they were runner-up in the championship.

Before beginning his coaching career with Marshall, during the 2013-2015 seasons, Reed spent his time as the primary catcher for the Herd, where he was named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List. After being sidelined with a back injury during the 2016 season and receiving back surgery, Reed spent his 2017-2018 seasons as a pitcher for the Herd, where he was in the closer role. In 2017, Reed became the first pitcher to lead Marshall in wins and saves since 2005, he finished with a 6-5 record in 24 relief appearances, 38.1 innings with 34 strikeouts. In 2018, Reed led the team in saves and recorded 16 strikeouts in 12.2 innings.

Prior to Marshall University, Reed played for Clemson University during the 2013 season under Coach Jack Leggett. That season he served as the mid-week catcher appearing in 6 games with a .500 BA and two RBI’s before missing the remainder of the season due to injury.

Reed received his Bachelor's degree in Sports Management/Marketing from Marshall University in 2016.
