Caleb Bowen joined the Thundering Herd coaching staff in Fall 2015. He is the head coach for cross country as well as for distance events during the spring track and field season. A four year varsity member, Bowen competed for the Thundering Herd cross country team from 2011-2014.
Bowen was named head coach of the men's and women's cross country team prior to the 2022 season. In 2022, Bowen oversaw three All-Conference honorees with Abby Herring, Kylee Mastin and Evan White in the team's first season in the Sun Belt, a number that matched the school-record for most in a season (2020 & 2016).
In 2023 and 2024, Bowen coached two Marshall women who have rewritten the record book in Herring and Mastin.
2023 saw Herring become the first in Marshall history the women's side to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships. She would also become the program's second female four-time All-Conference finisher with her 2nd place finish at the Sun Belt Championships.
In 2024, Mastin became Marshall's first female Individual Cross Country Champion with a winning 5K time of 17:06 at the Sun Belt Championships.
Since joining the staff, Bowen has coached 20 All-Conference honorees in cross country who have been honored 17 times.
On the track, Bowen has led his athletes to 18 women's school records (Indoor-800m, 1000m, Mile, 3000m, 5000m, DMR; Outdoor - 800, 1500m, 3000m 5000m, 10,000m, Steeplechase, 4x800m, DMR) and one men's school record (Outdoor - 800m). There have been 18 All-Conference honorees, with 12 indoor and six All-Conference honorees outdoors. There have been 17 individual scorers at conference Championships, and nine relay team scorers at the conference meet. Herring and Mastin have each won multiple gold medals and qualified for the NCAA East First Round with Coach Bowen.
As a student-athlete, he led the Marshall men in five out of six meets during his senior year. A native of Hurricane, W. Va., Bowen earned his Master's Degree in Secondary Education and completed his EDS in Curriculum Instruction from Marshall. Caleb continues to run post collegiately completing nine marathons and 13 ultra marathons. Out of these races, Caleb has won 10 and finished in the top-3 for seven others and holds four course records.
