Marshall Track Teams Perform Well at Virginia Tech

Blacksburg, Va. - Marshall University's men's 4x100-meter relay squad lowered the school record for the second consecutive week by recording a time of 41.13 seconds at Virginia Tech's Spring Gobbler Invitational Saturday.

The 4x100-meter relay team, comprised of B.J. Epps, Andrew Blair, Derrick Dixon and Terrance Tarpley, shaved .16-seconds off of its school record time at last weekend's Sea Ray Relays to finished second in the event. The University of North Carolina-Charlotte won the event with a time of 41.03 seconds.

Marshall's men's 4x400m-relay team took first place with a time of 3-minutes and 18.9 seconds at the meet. Marshall also received a first place performance from Aaron Trammell. The Marshall thrower won the shot put with a throw of 51-feet and 11.25 inches, defeating the second place finisher by over four feet. In addition to his first place performance in the shot put, Trammell placed third in the discus (153'08.00) and seventh in the hammer throw (145'04.00).

Andrew Blair, David Lyle, James Kramer and Josh Bradford also turned in notable performances. Blair finished fifth in the 100-meter dash (10.61) and seventh in the 200-meter dash (21.72). Lyle finished fourth in the 1,500-meter run (3:58.25) and seventh in the 3,000-meter run (9:02.10). Kramer placed third in the 5,000-meter run (15:58.51), and Bradford placed second in the pole vault with a season-best vault of 15-feet, nine inches.

Overall, Marshall's men's and women's throwers enjoyed great success. The Thundering Herd's throwers combined to record 13 top-10 finishes.

In addition to Trammell, Marshall's Jerod Smalley, Andrew Burchfield and Josh Sowers performed well. Smalley finished fourth in the shot put (47'07.25) and sixth in the hammer throw (145'08.00), while Burchfield placed sixth in the shot put (44'05.25) and sixth in the discus (153'07.00). Sowers finished fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 160'02.00.

Marshall's women were led by Alicia Cain who finished fourth in the shot put (41'00.25), eighth in the discus (121'02.00), and ninth in the hammer throw (124'08.00). April Craver also enjoyed a good outing. Craver finished fifth in the shot put (39'04.50), sixth in the discus (132'02.00) and eleventh in the hammer throw (114'01.00).

The Herd women also received notable performances from Michelle John and Becky Pouch. John finished seventh in the 400-meter dash (58.82) and Pouch finished ninth in the 1,500-meter run (4:51.83).

Marshall's athletes will next compete in the prestigious Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania. The world-renowned event that attracts thousands of athletes from across the globe begins Thursday.
