Double Plays Cost Baseball in 12-5 Loss to Ohio

Huntington, W.Va.-The Marshall University baseball team fell behind early and was unable to recover as they lost their series opener with Ohio University 12-5 at University Heights. The Thundering Herd threatened several times throughout the day; however, the team hit into six double plays.
With the loss, Marshall falls to 17-28 on the year, 7-13 in conference. Ohio improves to 20-23, 8-12 in conference play.
After a scoreless first inning, Ohio was able to put four runs on the board in the second to take a 4-0 lead. The key hit in the inning was a three run home run by Brandon Wheeler.
The Bobcats extended their lead to 5-0 in the third when Scott Brownlee hit a sacrifice fly to score Adam Fox.
After Ohio made it 7-0 with two runs in the fourth, Marshall was finally able to get on the board in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Clay DeSantis singled to center field to score David Colangelo to make it 7-1.
The Thundering Herd cut the lead to 7-2 in the sixth when Craig Dziedziejko singled to right field to score Aaron Amburgey.
The Bobcats put the game away in the seventh, however, by scoring four runs and taking a commanding 11-2 lead. All four runs came off of two Bobcat home runs, a two run shot by Adam Fox and another two run homer by Ben Crabtree.
Marshall was able to score three in the bottom of the eighth, but it was not nearly enough as Ohio added another run in the ninth to make the final 12-5.
Ohio starting pitcher Marc Cornell (6-4) went the distance, allowing three earned runs on eight hits while striking out eight Marshall batters.
Chris Fritz (5-6) pitched 6.1 innings, allowing nine hits and 11 runs, nine earned, in the loss.
The series will continue with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 11, in Athens, Ohio. The series finale returns to University Heights on Sunday, May 12, at 1:00 p.m.
