Baseball Falls in Season Finale to Eastern Michigan 10-6

Huntington, W.Va.-The Marshall University baseball team dropped their season finale to Eastern Michigan University 10-6 at University Heights. With the loss, Marshall ends the season on a ten game losing streak and finishes with a 17-35 record, 7-20 in conference. With the win, EMU clinched the Mid-American Conference West Division title and finishes the regular season with a 30-26 record, 19-9 in conference.

The Eagles jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning. Tony Palazzolo doubled to left-center field with the bases loaded and all three runners were able to score easily.

After the Eagles added another run in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead, Marshall was able to get on the board in the bottom of the inning when Craig Dziedziejko crushed a home run over the left field wall to make the score 4-1.

The Thundering Herd cut the lead to 4-2 in the fourth when Homer Renshaw reached on an error by the center fielder that allowed Ryan Kobbe to score.

However, Eastern Michigan scored the next five runs to take a commanding 9-2 lead. The key hit in the outburst was a three run home run by Greg Anglin.

Marshall rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 9-5. A double by Marty Rini scored Matt White and Aaron Amburgey followed with a double to plate Rini and Renshaw.

Marshall was unable to threaten the rest of the way, however, as the Eagles added a run in the top of the ninth and MU only managed a solo home run by White in the bottom of the inning as EMU swept the series with the 10-6 victory.

Anthony Tomey (5-5) picked up the victory for Eastern Michigan, allowing five runs on five hits over 5.1 innings of work.

Dave Pieron pitched 3.2 innings of relief work and recorded the save.

Sean Smith took the loss for Marshall, allowing ten runs over 8.1 innings of work.

Dziedziejko led the way for Marshall, going two for four on the day with a run and a RBI.

The game marked the end of the careers for Marshall seniors David Colangelo, Ryan Kobbe, Homer Renshaw, Marty Rini, Sean Smith and Matt White.
