- Box Score
LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky toppled Marshall 14-1 in baseball action at Cliff Hagan Stadium on Tuesday on the strength of 18 base hits.
Marshall (5-11-1) struggled to manufacture base hits and stranded nine runners during the game. Kentucky put together a flurry of hits as seven of nine Wildcat starters produced base knocks.
Fritz Conrad (Ocoee, Fla.) started the game on the mound for Marshall, but pitched only 1.2 innings due to an ankle injury suffered when he attempted to track down a foul ball. Conrad (0-2) allowed one run and five hits in his brief stint.
Mike Marchyshyn (Markham, Ont.) came in to relieve Conrad, but after giving up three straight singles to open up the third inning, head coach Dave Piepenbrink inserted Patrick Molinari (Plainfield, Ill.) with the bases loaded. The right hander allowed four earned runs on five hits in the inning, as the Wildcats (8-11) scored eight runs to take a 9-0 lead. UK?s scoring splurge was highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Brad Pickrell.
Pickrell, who hit a walk-off three-run home run versus the Herd on Feb . 28, was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored.
Marshall scored its run when Corie O?Bryan (Frederick, Md.) hit his fourth home run of the year in the fourth inning, a solo shot to shorten the Kentucky lead at 9-1.
Marshall was able to cool off the Wildcat bats following the eight-run third inning, holding UK to one hit from the fourth through seventh innings. Steve Ziroli (LaGrange, Ill.) and Chris Cummings (Huntington, W. Va.) effectively pitched those innings for MU.
The Wildcats posted five runs in the eighth inning. J.B. Schmidt hit a two-run single to cap off the Kentucky scoring at 14 runs.
NOTE: Due to predictable weather conditions in Huntington, W. Va., this week, Marshall's home opener versus Concord, scheduled for Wednesday, has been moved to Saturday at 2 p.m. Also, the Youngstown State game, scheduled for Thursday, has been cancelled.
