HUNTINGTON, W.Va.?Senior track and field standout Erin Compton (Oak Hill, W.Va.) racked up another honor after being named an All-American by the U.S. Track and Field Coaches Association for the 2003 outdoor track and field season. Compton finished eighth in the discus at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
Compton became the highest finisher at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Marshall track and field history. The season was a long list of firsts for the Marshall track and field program. Compton became the first Thundering Herd athlete to win an event at the historic Penn Relays and the first athlete to earn All-American Honors.
?I think it makes a lot of hard work worth while,? head coach Jeff Small said. ?Hopefully, by seeing Erin do it will motivate the younger kids to do more.?
Compton season had a string of highlights which started March 15 at the Ohio Early Bird Invitational. The Oak Hill native took first in both the hammer and discus at the event and broke a facility record which still stands in the discus. Compton won 7-of 10 discus championships and holds the school records in the discus (171-feet-0 inches), hammer throw (181-11) and the 20 pound weight throw (59-1.25) for the indoor season. She also reclaimed the Mid-American Conference discus championship this season. Compton has 11 career discus victories and 17 overall victories.
The Marshall women?s track and field team returns 19 athletes for the 2003-2004 indoor and outdoor seasons, including nine seniors and seven sophomores.
