10/6/2004
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. ? Several Marshall baseball players participated in various summer leagues around the country, making significant contributions to their teams and improving their skills for the upcoming season.
Pitcher Chris Cummings (Huntington, WV) had a stellar campaign with the Lima Locos of the Great Lakes League. Cummings, who emerged as a starter with the Herd late in the year, started six games for the Locos going 4-1 with a 1.89 ERA.
He helped lead the team to the Great Lakes League Championship and was named First Team All Great Lakes. Baseball America also recognized Cummings as the third best professional prospect in the league.
The Herd had another player lead his team to a championship, second baseman Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ontario). Jamieson played for the Calgary Dawgs, who went 33-19 on their way to the Western Major Baseball League Championship. Jamieson played in 48 games, starting 44 and batted .299 with 30 RBIs and 30 runs scored.
Catcher Rich Russell (Toronto, Ontario) played for the La Crosse Loggers of the Northwoods League. The Loggers were First Half Southern Division Champions in the league. Russell played in 41 games for the Loggers, batting .204. Even though his bat was quiet, his defense was superb and he was awarded the Silver Glove Award as the top defensive catcher in the league.
Marshall sent four players to the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL). Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL), Mike Marchyshyn (Markham, Ontario) and Roddy Stieger (Westchester, OH) played for the Plattsburgh Thunder. Mike Marchyshyn made a team high 15 appearances for the Thunder, posting a 2.51 ERA in 32.1 innings pitched. All three were selected to play in the league All-Star Game.
Nick Wolle (Coatesville, PA) did double duty for the Allegany County Nitros. He played in 23 games recording a .200 average with ten hits in 50 at bats, but on top of that, made three pitching appearances, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing only one opponent hit in 15 AB?s.
Sophomore Adam Dobies (Pittsburgh, PA) pitched for the Herndon (VA) Braves, who finished as the runner-ups in the Clark Griffith Collegiate League. He made ten appearances posting a 3.38 ERA in 37.1 innings. Junior Chris Koutsavlis (Pittsburgh, PA) pitched 54.1 innings for the Petersburg (VA) Generals of the Coastal Plain League. He had an ERA of 3.15.
