LEXINGTON, Ky. - Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL) went 4-4 with five RBI?s to lead the Marshall University baseball team to a 6-2 win Wednesday night at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
The Herd (10-11) got the scoring started in the bottom of the second, taking a 2-0 lead. Francois Larmore (Magnolia, NJ) led off the inning with a single. After Corie O?Bryan (Frederick, MD) hit a fly ball to the warning track, catcher Rich Russell (Toronto, Ont.) hit a double down the right-field line. With men on second and third, Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL) notched a single to center to bring in the runners and give the Herd a 2-0 lead.
Herd starter Scott Henning (Wilmington, DE) allowed one hit in the first, but ran into trouble in the second. Henning walked the first batter of the inning and gave up a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner to second. The next two batters singled to load the bases with one out, but Henning was able to get the final two batters out to end the inning. In the third, Wildcat Mike Breyman notched a one-out double. After John Shelby struck out, UK DH Aaron Edwards hit a double top bring in Breyman and make the score 2-1.
While pitchers Henning, Adam Dobies (Pittsburgh, PA) and Steve Ziroli (LaGrange, IL) kept the Wildcats in check through the middle of the game, the Herd offense kept threatening, mustering seven hits following their two runs in the second. Their persistence paid off in the top of the eighth when Chris Monaco (Tucson, AZ) notched his third single of the day. He moved to second on a ground out by Marshall Murray (Walnut Creek, CA) and scored when Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) hit a single to give MU a 3-1 lead.
The inning did not stop there. Larmore notched his second hit of the day to move Frederick to second. Marshall loaded up the bases when Corie O?Bryan reached on an error. After Russell struck out, Joe Glevenyak notched his fourth hit of the day, a double to center, to empty the bases and give MU a 6-1 lead. The hit also gave him a total of five RBI?s on the day.
Chris Cummings (Huntington, WV) came into the game in the bottom of the eighth and retired the Wildcats in order. In the bottom of the ninth, Chris Meadows (Huntington, WV) came in. He gave up a home run to Andrew Levenson, but was able to get the next three batters out to end the game and give the Herd a 6-2 victory.
With the win, Marshall improves to 11-11. The loss drops the Wildcats to 14-7. It is the first time since 1998 that Marshall defeated Kentucky.
Scott Henning earned the win, improving his record to 2-3. Glevenyak led the way for MU, going 4-4. Chris Monaco notched three hits on the day and Larmore had two.
The Herd will now head into the Mid-American Conference schedule, opening up on Friday at Eastern Michigan. MU will look to build on today?s win heading into the conference. Log on to HerdZone.com for updates on the Herd as they look to defeat the EMU Eagles this weekend.
