- Box Score
YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Marshall baseball team fell victim to a late inning rally by the Eastern Michigan Eagles for the second straight day, falling 3-2 in ten innings on Saturday.
Marshall (11-13, 0-2 MAC) took a 2-1 lead over EMU (7-10, 2-0 MAC) in the sixth, but the Eagles tied it up in the seventh and got the win on a bases loaded walk in the tenth.
The majority of the contest was a pitcher?s duel as MU starter Chris Koutsavlis (Pittsburgh, PA) and Matt Dillard of EMU both pitched strong games. Koutsavlis gave up one run in 6 2/3 innings and Dillard pitched ten innings, earning the win for EMU.
Eastern Michigan came out strong in the first. After retiring the side in the top of the inning, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom. Eagle Brian Bixler walked and stole second and third. After the next batter struck out, Derek Peterson notched a single to bring in Bixler and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The next four innings turned out to be a pitcher?s duel as Marshall was held to only two hits through the fifth and Chris Koutsavlis (Pittsburgh, PA) limited EMU to one run and four hits. The Herd had five base runners through the fifth, but made a charge in the top of the sixth. With one out, Marshall notched three straight singles. Mike Koitsopoulos (Markham, Ont.) started it off to bring up Chris Monaco (Tucson, AZ). A single by Josh McConnell (Phenix City, AL) knotted the game at one. With Monaco on third, Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring in the run and give MU a 2-1 lead.
Eastern tied the game back up in the eighth. Eagles Tremaine Riley singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a single by Brian Bixler. That brought up Ryan Ford, who hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in the run and tie the game. In the eighth, Scott Henning (Wilmington, DE) was brought in. Henning ran into problems when he had men on first and third with one out, but got the second out on a bunt and managed to get Tremaine Riley to ground out to third to end the inning.
Henning was not as lucky in the tenth, loading up the bases with no outs. Chris Meadows (Huntington, WV) was brought in and managed to get the first out of the inning, but walked Matt Moffett to bring in the winning run.
Henning took the loss, dropping his record to 2-4. The Eagles out-hit MU, 11-7. Seven different players got hits.
The Herd will look to rebound in the final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. After tomorrow?s game, the Herd will head to Louisville to take on the Cardinals on Tuesday night before heading home to take on Miami (Ohio) University next weekend in the MAC home opener.
