LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville Cardinals scored 17 runs on 14 hits to down the Marshall University baseball team, 17-5, Tuesday night at Cardinal Stadium.

Things started out well for MU as the Herd (11-15, 0-3 MAC) bats came out hitting in the top of the first, tallying three straight hits to open the game against the Cardinals (15-9), starting with a single by Chris Monaco (Tucson, AZ). Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) notched a single down the third base line to advance Monaco to third. That brought up Francois Larmore (Magnolia, NJ), who notched a single to right to bring in Monaco to give MU the early 1-0 lead. Rich Russell (Toronto, Ont.) notched the fourth straight single to open the game and load the bases. The Herd took a 2-0 lead when Frederick scored on a wild pitch.

Freshman Adam Dobies (Pittsburgh, PA) was given his first collegiate start and cruised through the first inning, but had some trouble in the bottom of the second. With one out and two men on, Cardinal Isiah Howes hit an RBI single to make the score 2-1. A wild pitch by Dobies brought in the tying run.

Marshall responded in the top half of the third when Frederick and Larmore notched singles to start the inning. After Russell struck out, Corie O?Bryan (Frederick, MD) hit a double down the third base line to bring in two runs and give the Herd the 4-2 lead.

Louisville came right back in the bottom of the inning to take their first lead of the contest. The first three batters reached base, the first on an error and the next two by singles, the latter being an RBI single by Ron Braun. After getting the first out, Dobies allowed a triple to Ryan McKinnon to empty the bases and give the Cardinals the 5-4 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Marshall got right back in the game. With one out, Frederick and Larmore notched their third hits of the game, both singles, to reach base. After Russell struck out, O?Bryan hit a single to bring in his third run of the day and tie the game at 5-5.

The Cardinals took control of the game in the sixth. Scott Henning (Wilmington, DE), who replaced Dobies in the fourth, got the first two outs of the inning, but allowed three straight singles to load the bases. That brought up UL right fielder Mark Jurich, who hit a grand slam to left field to make it a 9-5 Louisville lead. Louisville added insurance in the eighth, notching eight runs on five hits and five walks to lengthen their lead to 17-5.

Louisville?s pitching staff sat the Herd down in order from the seventh to ninth innings to seal the win.
