HUNTINGTON, W. Va. ? A home run in the bottom of the fifth inning by senior Mike Koitsopoulos (Markham, Ont.) gave the Herd a 4-3 lead, which they would hold on to and earn their second Mid-American Conference win of the season.

Marshall (14-20, 2-7 MAC) started off slow as Ohio (11-19, 4-6 MAC) sat the Herd down in order in the first two innings, while taking a 1-0 lead in the second off of MU starting pitcher Brian Chrisman (Pittsburgh, PA).

The Herd bats got going in the bottom of the third when Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL) led the inning off with a single, followed by a Brad Helm (Downington, PA) walk. After Chris Monaco (Tucson, AZ) walked, Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ont.) reached on an error, scoring two runs, making it a 2-1 Marshall lead. Jamieson was thrown out trying to advance to second.

The Bobcats came back in the top of the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. After allowing a one out walk, Bobcat Dan Lunsford hit a double to have runners on second and third with one out. The next batter, Brian White, reached on a Koitsopoulos error, scoring one run. Dusty Hammond hit a sacrifice fly to left to give OU a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Marshall took the lead for good. Brad Helm was issued his second walk of the day to bring up Mike Koitsopoulos. Koitsopoulos hit a home run to left field to give MU a 4-3 lead. It was his second home run of the season.

Brian Chrisman pitched five innings, giving up three unearned runs on two hits. He was replaced by senior Steve Ziroli (LaGrange, IL) with two men on in the sixth. Ziroli had a stellar outing going 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits. With two outs in the ninth inning, Chris Meadows (Huntington, WV) earned his fourth save of the season, striking out Bryan Buck, the only batter he faced.

The Herd pitching staff had a strong outing, holding the Bobcats to only three runs on four hits. MU hitters notched four runs on eight hits. Jamieson led the team with two hits while six others had one hit apiece.

?This was a big win for us, its good to start off a conference weekend with a win,? MU Coach Dave Piepenbrink said. ?Its good to win, but we still have more work to do this weekend.?

The Herd and Bobcats will square off in game two of the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. at University Heights. The game can also be heard on 930 AM WRVC with Steve Cotton and Woody Woodrum calling all of the action at the Heights.
