HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The move to Conference USA will provide the Marshall baseball team with quite possibly its toughest schedule in school history, as head coach Dave Piepenbrink announced his team's 2006 schedule Monday. The rugged slate features matchups with five NCAA tournament teams from last season, including four from Conference USA.
"Our schedule is challenging from top to bottom this year," Piepenbrink said. "Conference USA is one of the premier baseball conferences in the country with Tulane making the College World Series and Rice advancing to the Super Regionals last year. There will be a lot of tough games, but we are looking forward to the challenge."
The Thundering Herd plays three-game home conference series against 2005 NCAA Tournament participants Southern Miss and Rice and hits the road to battle Tulane - a 2005 College World Series participant. Marshall also will play at East Carolina in a three-game league series and Miami (Ohio) for one game. Both squads also competed in the NCAA tournament last year.
Marshall will play its 12 home conference games at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, W.Va., home of the single-A West Virginia Power. The nonconference portion of the home schedule will take place at University Heights Field in Huntington.
The Herd opens its season Feb. 17 at Belmont and plays its home opener March 3 against Buffalo. Marshall competes in its first Conference USA series March 24-26 at Houston before returning home the following weekend to battle UCF in Charleston.
Conference USA consists of nine teams for baseball - East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, Southern Miss, Tulane, UAB and UCF.
