- Box Score
ATHENS, Ohio - Junior Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) had a career high five hits as the Marshall baseball team downed the Ohio Bobcats, 9-6, Saturday night at Bob Wren Stadium.
Frederick went 5-6 with three runs scored and an RBI in the outing. The five hits tops his previous high of four, which he accomplished last season against Eastern Kentucky. The last five hit game for the Herd came last season when Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL) notched five hits in a win over Morehead State.
The Herd (11-19, 6-5 MAC) ended its recent three-game losing streak and dealt the Bobcats (14-14, 5-4 MAC) only their second loss in their last 13 games.
Marshall got things off to a quick start, registering three runs in the first inning. After a leadoff walk to Adam Ptacek (Assaria, KS), Adam Frederick and Joe Glevenyak both singled. Glevenyak's hit brought in Ptacek for the first run of the game.
A walk to Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ont.) loaded up the bases for Aaron Levinson (Seattle, WA), who drew the third walk of the inning for MU and also brought in the second run. That marked the end of Ohio U. starter Rob Harmon's day as he was replaced by Dan O'Rourke. O'Rourke came in with the bases loaded and not outs, and did a nice job minimizing the damage, allowing just one run to score on a sacrifice fly by Roddy Stieger (Westchester, OH). Marshall made it a 4-0 game in the second on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Jamieson.
Ohio U. got its offense going in the bottom of the third, cutting Marshall's lead to one run. Dusty Hammond and Bryant Witt started off the inning with consecutive doubles to bring up Bryan Buck, who hit a sacrifice fly to left to get the Bobcats on the board. After two walks loaded up the bases with two outs, Anthony Gressick laced a single to center field to bring in two more runs.
Some two-out magic in the fifth inning helped the Herd extend its lead to 8-4. A two-out single by Brad Helm (Downingtown, PA) got things started. Helm also would steal second. Nick Wolle (Coatesville, PA) was hit by a pitch to bring up Adam Ptacek. Ptacek singled to the left side to score Helm. The next two batters, Frederick and Glevenyak, each had RBI singles. Another run later scored on a wild pitch.
The Bobcats came back in the bottom of the fifth and began to chip away at their four run deficit, scoring a run in the fifth and adding on two more in the sixth to cut the lead to two runs, but Brendon Bump (Lawrence, KS) shut the door on any comeback attempt by the Bobcats, pitching four scoreless innings, giving up just one hit. The Herd put the icing on the cake with a run in the ninth, and Bump closed the deal for his third save of the season.
Chris Cummings (Huntington, WV) went five innings, giving up six runs on six hits. He got the win, his second of the season. Ohio U. starter Rob Harmon gave up three runs and did not record an out. He dropped to 3-3 on the season, taking the loss.
MU notched 16 hits on the day, led by Frederick's five. Joe Glevenyak had three hits and two RBI's. Brad Helm and Aaron Jamieson each had two.
The Herd will look to clinch its second series in a row from the Bobcats as MU won two of three last season in Huntington. Sunday's game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start and can be heard live on 930 AM WRVC.
