LEXINGTON, Ky. - Kentucky third baseman JB Schmidt went 1-2 with two RBI's as Kentucky defeated the Thundering Herd baseball team, 3-1, on Wednesday night.
Schmidt singled up the middle with two outs in the fourth inning to give the University of Kentucky (21-19) a 3-1 lead. That would mark the end of the scoring as UK would take the win.
The Herd (13-22, 6-6 MAC) scored its lone run of the game in the third inning. Adam Ptacek (Assaria, KS) recorded his first triple of the season with one out and later scored when Aaron Levinson (Seattle, WA) grounded out to short.
From there, the Wildcats controlled the scoring. They tied the game up in the bottom of the third. Ryan Wilkes was given a walk to lead off the inning. After stealing second, he would score two batters later when Shaun Lehmann singled to left field.
One inning later, the Wildcats did most of their damage, putting two runs on the board to take a 3-1 lead. Starter Brian Knippelmeyer (Lincoln, NE) gave up two walks to lead off the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Matt Fritts advanced the runners to second and third and with two outs, JB Schmidt singled up the middle to bring in the two runners.
Marshall was unable to put up a fight in the late innings as Kentucky finished up the game retiring nine of the final ten Herd batters in the game.
The Herd offense recorded six hits, its lowest total since the final game of the Miami (Ohio) series earlier this year. Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ont.) had the only multi-hit game for MU, going 2-4. Four others notched one hit. Aaron Levinson had the only RBI of the game for MU with his RBI groundout in the third inning.
Kentucky was held to only four hits on the day, with most of the damage coming from JB Schmidt's two-RBI single. It was the walks, which helped UK in the end. Four batters were walked in the game, with three scoring the runs. Starter Brian Knippelmeyer pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up the three runs. From there, the bullpen did an admirable job, going 4 2/3 scoreless innings. Bryson Meyers (Oakland, MD) pitched 2 2/3 innings giving up two hits. Brendon Bump (Lawrence, KS) and David Slovak (Louisville, KY) each pitched a hitless inning to finish up the game.
Next up for the Herd is a trip to Central Michigan, the defending Mid-American Conference regular season champions. The series will start with a 3 p.m. game on Friday with the final two games starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
