BUFFALO, N.Y. - University at Buffalo catcher Dan Quinn hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning to help the Bulls to a series-clinching 6-2 win over the Marshall baseball team on Saturday afternoon.

Buffalo (18-30-1, 4-14-1) was up 3-2 over the Thundering Herd (16-33, 8-15 MAC) at the time as Quinn's homer gave the Bulls the insurance they needed to clinch the win.

Marshall took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Brad Helm (Downingtown, PA) started the inning off with a walk and moved to second on a bunt single by Nick Wolle (Coatesville, PA). A single by Adam Ptacek (Assaria, KS) loaded the bases up for Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ont.). Jamieson delivered a single, which would score Helm. Nick Wolle also scored on the when the UB left fielder made an error.

In the bottom of the inning, the Bulls cut the lead in half. David Amaro doubled with two outs and advanced to third and would later score on two wild pitches by Herd starter Jeremy Slone (Paintsville, KY).

The fifth inning saw another Buffalo run cross the plate to tie the game. Mike Connelly recorded an RBI double in the inning to score Andrew Wengert, who walked to start the inning.

Things got worse for the Herd in the seventh as Buffalo took its first lead of the game. Connelly struck again, recording his second RBI hit of the day, this one a single, to bring in David Amaro.

Buffalo got some much needed insurance in the eighth inning as three more runs would cross the plate to put the game out of reach. UB shortstop Joe Mihalics hit a one-out triple. A walk to UB first baseman James Kingsley brought Dan Quinn to the plate. At that point, pitcher Jeremy Slone was replaced in favor of Brendon Bump (Lawrence, KS), but the move did not pay off as Quinn would hit a three-run home run to make it a 6-2 Buffalo lead.

The Marshall offense went down in order in the ninth to finish off the game.

Despite recording 11 hits, the Herd was able to put up only two runs. Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA), Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL) and Brad Helm each notched two hits. Aaron Jamieson had the only RBI for Marshall as the other run that scored was unearned.

Marshall's pitching held the Bulls to only six hits, but they were all big ones, with the most damage coming via Quinn's home run. David Amaro and Mike Connelly had the only multi-hit games for the Bulls.

Jeremy Slone, who went 7 1/3 innings, took the loss for Marshall and falls to 1-4. Buffalo starter Shane Wolf went only three innings as the win went to reliever Sean McWilliams, who pitched the final six innings. He gave up just four hits over that span.

Baseball will finish up the season on Sunday, taking on the Bulls in the series finale at 1 p.m.. It will be the final game for the five seniors on the team: Brad Helm, Joe Glevenyak, Mike Marchyshyn (Markham, Ont.), Josh McConnell (Phenix City, AL) and Marshall Murray .
