CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Marshall's season-high four-game win streak was snapped on Wednesday when the nationally-ranked Virginia Cavaliers dealt the Thundering Herd baseball team a 12-0 loss at Davenport Field.

Virginia, ranked No. 21 in Collegiate Baseball, No. 22 in the USA Today Coaches' Poll and 24th in Baseball America, jumped all over Marshall (8-8) in its first at bat. The Cavaliers posted four runs in the first and never looked back, scoring runs in all but three innings.

Virginia used 12 hits and three Herd errors to pick up its 20th win of the season.

The Cavs (20-4) were led offensively by sophomore first baseman Sean Doolittle. UVa's clean-up hitter collected a team-high three hits (3-for-4) with two RBI. Catcher Ryan Hudson's only hit of the day was a three-run homer in the sixth, closing the UVa scoring barrage for the game.

Marshall's best chance to score came in the sixth, with runners on first and second with one out. However, relief pitcher Andrew Carraway doused MU's offensive threat by recording outs in the next two at bats.

Brandon Guyer and Tom Hagan also recorded a pair of RBI for Virginia, which is coming off a three-game sweep of then No. 2 Clemson.

Pat McAnaney (3-1) claimed the win after five innings of work. The left-hander struck out five, allowed five hits and walked only one. MU's Adam Dobies (0-1), in his second start of the season, allowed seven earned runs in three innings.

Carraway fanned five Herd batters in three innings, matching his strikeout total for the season entering the game.

Nick Wolle and Roddy Stieger picked up a pair of hits for Marshall. The duo went 2-for-4 in their respective plate appearances, with Stieger registering one of Marshall's two extra-base hits with a double in the sixth.

Marshall will turn its attention to conference play on Friday, beginning with a three-game series at Houston. The Herd's first taste of Conference USA baseball comes at 8 p.m. EST from Cougar Field.
