CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Marshall University's Kelly-Anne Billingy and Stephanie Cahill combined for 32 kills in the Thundering Herd's victory over West Virginia at the Charleston Civic Center Tuesday night.
Marshall (9-6, 1-0 C-USA) took the match 3-0 (30-17, 30-18, 30-19) and retained the "Golden Ball" in front of 523 at the Civic Center. Marshall has now defeated its intrastate rival, West Virginia (1-13), in five consecutive matches.
The Herd delivered 56 kills on the night, besting West Virginia and its 26. Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs said it is always a nice feeling to defeat the cross-state rival.
"If you can't get pumped up playing the blue and gold then you don't bleed green," he said.
Contributing with another all-around performance, Cahill continued her double-double spree with her fifth on the season. Her 13 kills paired with her match-high 12 digs was her third double-double in four matches. Jacobs said this type of performance is what she has to do to help her team.
"Right now she is doing what we need from her to win," he said. "Steph has the abilities to be the best all-around player on our team."
Leading all performers in kills was Billingy who recorded 19. Her hitting percentage of .515 was also match-best of players with five or more attempts. Jacobs said Billingy just knows how to rack up the kills.
"Chelsea Lazar and Uche Ndubisi also had good nights for us," he said "When other players step up around her (Billingy) it makes her that much more difficult to defend. Some teams are going to let her get hers (kills) and try to stop other people. That's when other teams get to pick their poison."
The Herd's Uche Ndubisi along with Billingy stepped in defensively with three blocks each.
Senior setter Christin Bimberg posted her 489th assist on the season by recording 31 against the Mountaineers. Jacobs said her progression as setter for the Herd is where it needs to be.
"This is the first chance she's gotten to run the Herd's offense," he said. "She is really starting to come along nicely."
The Herd will be gearing up to take a trip out to El Paso, Texas to play UTEP on Friday, Sept. 22 at 9 p.m.
