HOUSTON - Marshall University's Rachel Blankenship, a junior from Hurricane, W.Va., set a new school record and finished fifth in the shot put to lead the Thundering Herd women's track team at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships at Rice University on Friday.
Blankenship's throw of 13.83 meters or 45-04.50 feet set a new Marshall record, eclipsing the previous record of 45-04.25 feet that was set by Shani Brown in 2004. The throw was good enough for fifth place in the event. Blankenship's teammate LaTricia Jones also scored in the event with an eighth place finish with a throw of 13.23 meters (43-05.0).
Marshall's Tarrin Scott also scored for the Thundering Herd with an eighth place finish in the heptathlon. The two-day event concluded on Friday and Scott accumulated 4060 points.
Marshall will look for a strong finish in the C-USA Championships on Saturday. The three-day championships conclude with a full schedule of events.
