Herd Volleyball Outlasts Virginia Commonwealth University, 3-2

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Marshall University volleyball junior middle blocker Jalicia Ross (Bank Village, Trinidad) tallied four kills in game five to help lead the Herd to a 3-2 (30-20, 27-30, 24-30, 30-15, 15-11) victory over Virginia Commonwealth University in Saturday morning's Virginia Tech Tournament non-conference match at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va.

With the win, Marshall improves to 1-1 overall, while VCU falls to 0-2 overall.

Marshall won the first game and lost the next two before answering in the fourth game to force the deciding game five.

From there Ross and senior outside hitter Kelly-Anne Billingy (Trincity, Trinidad) took over the game combining for 7 kills to lift the Herd to a 15-11 victory. Billingy tallied a match-high 27 kills while Ross finished with 12 kills in the game.

"Kelly-Anne was doing what she does best," head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "Getting points down the stretch."

Marshall senior middle hitter Uche Ndubisi (Indianapolis, Ind.) tallied 14 kills while senior outside hitter Stephanie Cahill (Louisville, Ky.) added 12 kills and 16 digs for the Herd.

Herd freshman setter Elizabeth Fleming (South Bend, Ind.) dished out 65 assists and sophomore outside hitter Kristin Marcum (Arlington, Texas) totaled 13 digs.

"I think we have an excellent setter," Jacobs said. "I thought she ran the offense well and there were times when we were almost unstoppable. We just need to keep teaching her."

Senior libero Maggie Arias (Indianapolis, Ind.) notched a match-high 29 digs for the Herd.


"I believe this team can be great," Jacobs added. "Our greatest consistency is our inconsistency, and it's just going to take some time to get more consistent."

VCU freshman middle blocker Jessica Ojukwu (Sao Paulo, Brazil) tallied 15 kills and freshman outside hitter Ariel Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) added 12 kills in the loss.

Rams junior setter Cat Juson (Long Beach, Calif.) recorded 43 assists and 12 digs, while junior libero Laryssa Goncalves (Curitiba, Brazil) added a team-high 28 digs.

Marshall concludes Virginia Tech Tournament action Saturday, Aug. 25 when it takes on host Virginia Tech. Match time is slated for 6 p.m.
