Herd Spikers Fall To Pepperdine, 3-1

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University senior libero Maggie Arias (Indianapolis, Ind.) tallied a team-high 19 digs but Pepperdine had four players register double-digit kills to help lift the Waves to a 3-1 (30-23, 26-30, 13-30, 18-30) win over the Herd in Saturday morning's non-conference Friend of Coal Blue/Green Classic volleyball match at the Cam Henderson Center.
With the loss,
"Our service game was very tough," head coach Mitch Jacobs said of the success in game one. "That's what we had to do against this team, keeping our service game up. It was good through game one and game two up until the end."
In game two, the teams fought to 11 ties and four lead changes before the game was knotted at 23. from there, the Waves scored seven of the next ten points to pull away to the victory.
With the match knotted at one game apiece, Pepperdine built a 20-7 lead and used a 10-5 run to seal the third game.
The Waves posted a 20-12 lead in the fourth frame before the Herd get to within seven at 23-16. From there, the Waves mounted a 7-2 run to close out the match.
Freshman setter Elizabeth Fleming (
"We have a really great freshman setter," Jacobs said. "She's really starting to understand what we do but we need to keep her in the system. She had a beautiful match."
