Volleyball Hosts Pair of Weekend Conference USA Matches

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University volleyball team welcomes two Conference USA foes to the Cam Henderson Center this weekend. The first match is slated for Fri., Nov. 19 against Tulane, with first serve slated for 7 p.m. The Herd will then play Southern Miss on Sun., Nov. 21 at 1 p.m.
Marshall (10-18, 4-12 C-USA)
The Thundering Herd split a pair of matches last week, sweeping the Rice Owls before falling in five sets at Houston.
2010 Rewind: Marshall dropped both previous matches on the road against Tulane and Southern Miss, needing a fifth and deciding set to determine a winner.
At Southern Miss, the Herd claimed the first two sets, but the Golden Eagles rallied to win the next three to capture the match. Elizabeth Herman connected for a match-high 25 kills, while Elizabeth Fleming dished out 56 assists and set a career-best in digs with 19.
Against Tulane, Marshall traded sets with the home squad until eventually falling in the fifth stanza. Herman and Abby Tomas combine for 39 kills, while Fleming contributed a double-double with 44 assists and 17 digs.
Fleming Earns C-USA Weekly Award: Senior Elizabeth Fleming earned C-USA Setter of the Week honors for her weekend performances. The South Bend, Ind., native averaged 11.88 assists per set and tallied her team-best 13th double-double of the season. Against the Cougars, she tied her season-best total of 56 assists. It marked the ninth time in her career she has won the award.
5,000 Assist Mark: Elizabeth Fleming became just the third player at Marshall and eighth in Conference USA history to surpass the 5,000 assist plateau. She accomplished the feat in the three-set sweep of the Rice Owls in Houston. She has dished out 5,067 assists over her four-year career.
Closing In: Elizabeth Herman in closing in on 1,000 career kills in her time with the Thundering Herd. Currently, the Dunwoody, Ga., native has connected for 944 kills and is averaging 3.90 kills per set on the season.
Double Trouble: Elizabeth Fleming and Laura Der have combined for 17 double-doubles on the season. Der, a freshman had contributed four, while Fleming has tallied 13.
Tulane (10-19, 7-10 C-USA)
Scouting Report: Tulane is led offensively by the combo of Elizabeth Kale and Izabela Grot. Kale owns a .338 attacking percentage, which ranks ninth in the conference, while Grot is averaging 3.23 kills per set, placing her tenth in the league.
Southern Miss (18-10, 11-6 C-USA)
Scouting Report: Southern Miss is coming off a wins against UAB and Memphis in Hattiesburg and are winners of nine of its last ten matches. Setter Kelsea Seymour posted the league's first triple-double of the season by recording 10 digs, 34 assists and 13 digs in a four-set victory against Memphis.
Teammate Ashley Mell ranks second in the conference and 12th in the nation in kills per set at 4.44. She has posted 475 kills in 107 sets on the season.
