Baseball Weekend Round Up At Tulane

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University baseball club returns home after opening up the 2010 Conference USA campaign with a with a three-game series in New Orleans, La., against Tulane. The Thundering Herd earned the win in the second game, which was sandwiched around two losses during the weekend.

Marshall (10-12, 1-2 C-USA) is slated for a mid-week trip to play Eastern Kentucky at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, prior to hosting C-USA opponent Memphis for three games over the weekend. Game one is on Friday at 6:30 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. All three games will be played at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, W.Va.

Game 1: Tulane 4, Marshall 3
A strong outing from junior Ian Kadish was not enough as Tulane scored three times in the bottom of the ninth to take the first game of the series. Kadish fired the first 6.0 innings calming the Green Wave offense to one earned run on five hits with two punch outs.

Game 2: Marshall 7, Tulane 3
Victor Gomez launched a three-run homer and a total of seven pitchers kept TU off the scoreboard for the final six frames to win the first C-USA game of the season. A total team effort led the victory as 22 players made their way into the game.

Game 3: Tulane 6, Marshall 2
Kirby Pellant cranked two base hits and Herd starter Arik Sikula tossed a career-high 6.0 innings in his first start of the season, but TU batted around in the eighth, scoring four times to win the rubber match of the series.

Team Notes: Marshall is now 5-12-1 all-time vs. Tulaneââ'¬Â¦MU used a season-high 22 players in the 7-3 win on Saturdayââ'¬Â¦V. Gomez recorded at least one hit in every game to extend his hit streak to 16 gamesââ'¬Â¦V. Gomez tallied five RBI in the series and is now tied with Dave McAnallen (1988-91) for most RBI in a MU career (139)ââ'¬Â¦Pellant hit a team-best .385 (5-for-11) in the seriesââ'¬Â¦Josh Valle collected his 200th career hit.
