HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Eastern Kentucky scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back, knocking off the Marshall University baseball team, 10-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Kennedy Center.
Marshall (13-19) received two hits from James Lavinskas and base knocks from Kenny Socorro, Victor Gomez and Thor Meeks as five different Colonels pitchers held the Herd to five hits.
Colonels' starter Anthony Bazzani (2-3) logged the first 4.0 innings and surrendered just two hits to pick up his second win of the season.
EKU (18-15) loaded the bases in the top of the second without registering a hit at the plate. Thundering Herd starter Ben Frith (1-1) walked Ryan Faidley before plunking back-to-back batters to put the bases full of Colonels. EKU would end up batting around, scoring four runs, including a two-run single from leadoff hitter Richie Rodriguez.
In the top of the third EKU added a run when Faidley launched a solo homer to left field, upping the lead to 5-0.
The Colonels tacked on another run in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the ninth to round out the game's scoring.
The Herd received solid relief work from pitchers Tyler Gatrell, Kevin Shackelford and Mark Cann. The three combined to work 3.0 innings and did not allow a hit.
MU will host Conference USA foe Southern Miss for a three-game series starting Friday at 2:05 p.m. at Power Park in Charleston, W.Va.
