HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University baseball team made a mark on the scoreboard in each of the first five innings and held off a late surge to defeat Wright State 9-7 on Thursday afternoon at the Kennedy Center.

Marshall (24-29) tallied 10 hits and took advantage of three WSU (29-21) errors to win game one of the series. The remaining slate of games has been altered due to expected wet weather conditions in the Tri-State area. Both squads will now play a doubleheader on Friday, beginning at 11 a.m. Each contest is schedule for seven innings.

Kirby Pellant and James Lavinskas each collected two hits and two RBI and Isaac Ballou chipped in with a clutch two-run single for the Herd. Rhett Stafford and Thor Meeks unloaded for their fourth and seventh homers of the season, respectively.

Ian Kadish (3-6) worked into the sixth frame, logging 5.1 innings on the bump for the victory. The junior worked around three walks to fan four batters in front of four relievers that helped secure the win.

Kyle Blank, Tyler Gatrell and Ryan Kiel all were utilized out of the Herd bullpen, prior to closer Austin Coan entering the contest. Coan recorded the final five outs to pick up his 10th save of the season.

Leading 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth, MU plated four more runs, thanks to two-run singles from Ballou and Pellant to own a six-run advantage.

The Raiders refused to quit, scoring three times in the sixth and adding single runs in the seventh and eighth frames. Up 9-6 in the top of the eighth, Coan was brought in with the bases loaded and one out. The senior enforcer allowed a run to score on a sac fly, but kept the Raiders off the scoreboard the rest of the way to help capture game one of the three-game set.
